Artist's Comments

Another one from the sunset last night.
Just a single shot, no hdr, no manipulation, shot RAW and just sharpened in CS4.

*appologies, this is an HDR shot

Another 5 metres or so from here and you start sinking, fast. The tripod was sinking anyway because of the small feet so it was a real fight to get this shot.

It's a pity it was so windy, cos it's spoiled the reflection in the puddle, coming in from the left to the centre.

Critiques

I like your idea of photographing the sunset on the edge of this huge mud flat, and appreciate the effort it took not to get totally mired in the mud. I think the end result was worth the effort.

Though as you mentioned in your comment, the wind was blowing and did'nt allow a glassy surface on the water, I feel the texture it provides is equally as interesting, as though the reflection is an impressionist interpretation of the sky. And so there's no real loss to the beauty of the shot.

I also like how there are many random puddles throughout the mud flat. This gives a two fold effect. It adds little dabs and specks of color, helping add texture and interest to the mud, and also provides a good perspective reference as the flat plain of mud leads out towards the horizon. In a sense this is also an imperfect mirror of the effect the clouds themselves provide. Choosing to compose the shot so the horizon line is centered in the frame helps re-inforce this mirroring between the earth and sky.

The point of land jutting into the frame helps define the horizon and points to the sunsetting at the center of the composition. Helping further draw one in. While the point of land works well with this shot, it would do equally well if it were'nt there.

And beautiful color too.

Imo this one is best out of 3, the perspective makes it look better!

Yeah thanks for that. I lowered the tripod (to about 18 inches) to get more of the sand/mud textures. The tripod i use will go much lower but the tripod and i were sinking pretty fast in the soft sand/mud

Thanks a lot, i need to get an ND grad cos allthough i love to do HDR, the ND grad will give me better exposures out in the field. It IS an HDR shot by the way, my bad
